During this time of the year, most nations of the world are celebrating what is commonly known as “Thanksgiving”. This celebration has become a tradition in many cultures today. Every last Thursday of November family and friends meet to share meals and drinks in celebration of this event. It is also a tradition to slaughter a turkey or two, depending on the size of the family, for consumption and thanksgiving for which the contemporary Christian or non-Christian has no clue why. The turkey has become a token of thanksgiving unto our Sovereign God or unto some god depending on who is giving the thanks. The question now is “Is this really a thanksgiving unto the Lord for His goodness” or it is just a time of family reunion to spend time together and enjoy food and drinks together. Are people really certain about what they are giving thanks for? Do they even know the genesis of their thanksgiving and to whom thanks is given? Christians alike are caught up in this celebration. My concern is that many go about their lives all year round without giving thanks for the existence or the food and the shelter they enjoy every day of their lives.
Writing from a Christian perspective, I believe thanksgiving must be a daily exercise. The Bible in Philippians 4 vs. 6 enjoins us to incorporate thanksgiving even in our prayers unto the true living God. We are also made aware in 1 Thessalonians 5 vs. 18 that thanksgiving is the will of God in Christ concerning His people. Being the will of God for His people means it must be a daily activity just as eating and drinking is a daily activity. Thanksgiving must not be something we celebrate once a year, especially, if a person is a believer in Christ Jesus. My dearest brothers and sisters, let us cultivate the habit of daily thanksgiving unto the true God who supplies our daily needs and watches over us and make sure we are cared for and protected from the onslaught of the wicked one. It is expected of all humans to give thanks unto God without any reservations. Children of God, especially, are to commune as a body to give thanks unto God on a monthly basis. Being alive today is more than enough to give Him thanks. Be in good health and being under the covering of His hand is enough to give thanks daily to God. Itemize your blessings one-by-one and show your appreciation for every single blessing you enjoy daily throughout the year. This is what pleases God. Ceaseless thanksgiving and appreciation allows God to open doors of breakthrough unto the children of God. Cultivate that habit and be blessed in Jesus name.
